A guide to talking about money with your partner

Money impacts every aspect of our lives. It goes without saying that it deeply impacts our intimate relationships. Yet, talking about money can be one of the most difficult conversations we have with our partners.

Talking about money can be challenging for many reasons. We bring a lot of unconscious beliefs and habits into our relationships. We may have assumptions about what money means to someone, about generosity, love, fairness, and worthiness. We may feel that one person has greater authority over household finances or that one person has more decision-making power. But, when we don’t talk about money in our intimate relationships, we miss an opportunity to learn about our loved one in critical ways. And, importantly, we fail to ensure we’re moving in aligned directions.

I regularly facilitate these challenging money conversations with couples. The goal is to understand one another and move in an aligned direction. I know how tough these conversations can be. We have them because they are important; they can deepen and strengthen a relationship. Once you can freely talk about money, you can have every other difficult conversation, too.

Because I think money conversations are so important, I’ve created this guide for you to use to get started. This guide offers a framework to get to know, understand, and acknowledge your partner in a new way.

If you don’t yet have valentines plans with your sweetie, grab a copy of this guide, cozy up, and get comfortable talking about money. It will impact every other area of your life (in a very good way).
